Adelfos Ensemble Spring Concert - Saturday, May 3, 2008

April 7, 2008

Adelfos Ensemble is pleased to announce that our annual Spring Concert will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM in the chapel at St. Anthony's Seminary, 2300 Garden Street in Santa Barbara.

This concert promises to be the most refined yet and is in keeping with what Josef Woodard identified as our "willingness to move left and right of center in the choral tradition." The program will feature the Four Motets by Maurice Duruflé, as well as works by Stravinsky, Chesnokov, Rachmaninoff, Tavener and Ligeti. Our program will also feature Donald Bohen's Night Songs, an intriguing setting of two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for six-part male chorus and piano.

Tickets are $20, students and seniors $15 and are available online, from your friendly neighborhood Adelfos Ensemble singer or Board member, or at the door.

Come and hear what the Santa Barbara News-Press called "a taut, seamlessly textured ensemble sound." We look forward to seeing you there on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 PM.

Adelfos Ensemble Spring Concert: June 8 @ St. Anthony's

Adelfos Ensemble is thrilled to bring their spring repertoire to the lovely St. Anthony's Chapel for a single evening of a cappella song on Friday June 8th, 2007 at 7:30 pm.

Built in 1899, before the advent of public address systems, St. Anthony's Seminary Chapel boasts a lush and rich acoustic that is unrivaled in our region. This intimate chapel lends its acoustic wonderfully to the performance of unaccompanied vocal music and Adelfos has based many of this concert's musical selections upon this acoustic quality.

The eight-member male vocal ensemble begins its third concert season with an exquisite selection of music ranging from 11th century plainsong to 20th century composition. Among the selections to be performed are Thomas Tallis' Lamentations of Jeremiah and Francis Poulenc's Four Short Prayers of St. Francis of Assisi. Additionally, Adelfos will perform boisterous Sea Shanties and American Negro Spirituals as well as a selection of carols from the British Isles.

Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased in advance on the Adelfos website, www.adelfosensemble.com or, if still available, at the door. Adelfos' debut Christmas compact disc, Salvation is Created, (released December, 2005) will also be available online or at the door while supplies last.

Adelfos Ensemble Presents: In the Bleak Midwinter

On Friday, December 8th at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, December 9th at 3:00 pm, Adelfos Ensemble will proudly present their second annual Christmas Concert at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Comprised of 8 male singers, Adelfos debuted in June of 2005 with a small concert and reception at Santa Barbara's historic Presidio Chapel. Since then, the group has enjoyed musical growth among its members as well as great support from the community.

This concert's title is drawn from the conviction that even in the darkest of times, a promise of hope and redemption is offered to mankind. Gustav Holst's haunting setting of the Christina Rossetti poem, "In the Bleak Midwinter," considers the immeasurable gift of Christmas in the context of the harshest of seasons.

Other musical selections will include Poulenc's Four Short Prayers of St Francis of Assisi, Renaissance classics by Palestrina and Pitoni as well as original arrangements of traditional carols. The members of Adelfos believe that music is a gift, and they look forward to sharing this gift with the community.

We are also pleased to announce that the guest artist for our upcoming concert is Patrick Lindley, Principal Musician for the Drama & Dance Department at the University of California Santa Barbara. Mr. Lindley was the first harpsichordist to receive the prestigious Beebe Award for study and travel in Europe, where he worked with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam. He has performed to critical acclaim throughout Europe and the United States, and is also an accomplished pianist, composer and improviser. You can learn more about Patrick at http://www.patricklindley.com.

Trinity Episcopal Church is located at 1500 State Street, at the corner of State and Micheltorena Streets in Santa Barbara.

A reception will follow the Friday night concert.

Tickets cost $12 each and can be purchased in advance on the Adelfos website, www.adelfosensemble.com or, if still available, at the door. Adelfos' debut Christmas CD, Salvation is Created, (released December, 2005) will also be available online or at the door.

Tickets purchased online up to Friday at 3:00 pm will be held at the door.
